The parent group session was organized by the Department of Gender in collaboration with the GT. Accra Regional Coordinating Council with funding from the UNFPA.

The Regional Director of the Department of Gender, Madam Matilda Banfro, educated participants on the difference between sex and gender. She further explained Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and the various forms it can take. She also highlighted the effects and consequences of SGBV on individuals, families, and communities.

Madam Banfro further quoted various laws and conventions that protect people against sexual and gender-based violence. She finally educated participants on where and how such issues can be reported for the necessary support and action.

A representative from PPAG, Accra, Madam Antoinette Da-Rocha, also gave a presentation on Reproductive Health Education. Her presentation created an open platform for participants to ask questions and share their views. Parents, opinion leaders, the Futuenya Community Chairman, the Presiding Member, and traditional leaders were all present and actively involved in the discussions.

The Ada East District Director of Social Welfare, Mr. Addy, urged participants to take the engagement session seriously, describing the subject as an all-inclusive issue. He encouraged community members to visit the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development office at the Ada East District Assembly for redress whenever they face related challenges. He assured them that anyone who feels afraid to report such issues can safely approach the office for support and protection.

The District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education, Madam Blewusi, also encouraged parents and community members to get involved in the proper upbringing of children. She stated that when children are guided, disciplined, and kept in school, it will help reduce wayward behaviour and contribute to the future development of Ada East.

The Presiding Member, Hon. Achia, also disclosed that bye-laws have been drafted and forwarded to Accra for endorsement. He explained that when approved, the bye-laws will help strengthen discipline, protection, and community development efforts in the district.

The session ended with participants expressing excitement and appreciation for the education received. They also showed readiness to support the campaign against misinformation and disinformation on reproductive health education, sexual and gender-based violence, and child protection.
