The Works Department is one of the core departments of the District Assembly. Its key functions is to administratively advice, guide and participate in any function that management may deem necessary to engage the staff of the works department and this is done within the framework of the rules and regulations binding the particular activity.
To this end,, for delivery standards the works department is structured administratively as illustrated in the organogram below :
For each of the functional areas to be seen with regards to how they perform, each unit is discussed as follows:
PROJECTS
This unit provides all the basic design, surveys working and structural drawings as might be needed for the initiation process, sourcing and procurement of works and their implementation. Works after they are procured are thus either executed by a contractor under the supervision of staff of the works department, otherwise in case of direct labour works they are handled directly under the supervision of staff of the works department.
ROADS
This normally comes under the roads unit specifically, feeder roads. Here also, initial survey works are normally carried and mapping then takes place. Sometimes, selected footpaths which links various communities are chosen to be upgraded to feeder roads. When sources of funding are identified, procurement processes are then undertaken and the contract awarded for the feeder roads to be constructed.
Sometimes , existing ones are contracted to be reshaped or regraveled , thus the routine as well as periodic maintenance and new works come under the direct supervision of the staff of the roads unit of the works department.
DEVELOPMENT CONTROL
This is the unit which ensures that all developments in the district be it assembly project or those intended by the general public are done in an orderly manner conforming to build standards codes and regulations. These are done through supervision and application of professionalism. These normally go through the permit delivery process when it comes to development to be undertaken by the general public.
ESTATE MANAGEMENT
The estate is one of the units under the department which undertakes procurement for the supply of essential materials for the assembly. Its developments such as repair, renovation works and replacements of obsolete parts are undertaken.
